About this site

A free practice tool for sports officials who want to keep their rules knowledge sharp between assignments.

What it does

It presents real game situations and asks what the correct ruling is. You can answer multiple choice, or use it as a flashcard-style self test and reveal the ruling when you're ready. It keeps track of what you get wrong and brings those questions back more often, so your practice concentrates where you need it.

Fourteen sports are covered. Six have full rules and case-play questions; the rest currently cover officiating mechanics and signals, which is noted on each card.

Who made it

Built by Bill Toner, a working official — the tool I wanted for my own preparation, made available in case it's useful to others.

Not affiliated with any governing body

This site is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or approved by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), Little League Baseball, Incorporated, or any state association, league or officials organisation.

“NFHS”, “Little League” and all other names and marks referred to on this site belong to their respective owners. They are used only to identify which set of rules a question relates to.

Where the questions come from

The questions are based on each sport's official rules and published interpretations — the same situations an official has to be able to rule on. Answer options and explanations are my own, and everything is checked before publication.

No rulebook, case book or officials manual is reproduced here. If you want the official text, buy it from the governing body — you should own a current copy anyway.

About accuracy

Considerable care goes into getting these rulings right, and anything that can't be verified with confidence is left out rather than guessed at.

Even so: rules change every season, interpretations vary by state and league, and mistakes are possible. This site is for practice only. It is not an official interpretation and is not a substitute for your current rulebook, your association's guidance, or your assigner. Verify anything here against your own current rulebook before you rely on it in a game.

The site is provided as-is, without warranty of any kind.

Your privacy

Nothing you do here is collected.

  • No account, no login, ever.
  • Your quiz history, scores and weak areas are stored only in your own browser. They are never uploaded and never leave your device.
  • Your answers are not recorded, transmitted or analysed — not even anonymously.
  • Clearing your browser data, or using a different device, starts you fresh.

The site keeps ordinary web server logs (the same request records any website keeps) purely to see how much it's being used. Those are not linked to anything you answer. If you choose to send feedback, that message is stored so it can be acted on.
